# Hive Glamsterdam failures: Nethermind (item "nethermind", batch "hive-failures")

Researched 2026-10-27, using public pages only. I read the listings and the per-run result JSON directly. I took each failure message from the run's `testDetailsLog` file on the same host, using the byte offsets in `summaryResult.log` and fetching with HTTP Range. The fixture release comes from the head of each run's `simLog`.

Notes:
- All result JSONs are at `https://hive.ethpandaops.io/<listing>/results/<file>`.
- `glamsterdam` has no consume-wirex run for Nethermind, and `glamsterdam-quick` has no eels/execute run. The quick listing has only one consume-wirex run for Nethermind, so that suite has no previous run to compare against.
- In the quick listing, `hiveCommand` limits the tests with `--sim.limit=.*(2780|7708|7732|7778|7843|7928|7954|7975|7976|7981|7997|8024|8037|8038|8045|8061|8070|8159|8246|8282).*` (from the result JSON `runMetadata`). This is why the pre-Amsterdam-path failures below do not show up in the quick runs.
- These counts match the known context: 239 / 239 / 0 on glamsterdam (2026-10-26) and 4 / 4 / 0 / 0 on glamsterdam-quick (2026-10-27).
- The brief mentions "fixture v8.1.3" and the change of the undecodable-BAL expectation from -32602 to INVALID. These runs label their fixtures `tests@v21.0.1` and `tests@v21.0.2`, and I found no "v8.1.3" label on the pages I read. **None** of the Nethermind failures involves -32602, an undecodable BAL, or an INVALID-vs-error-code mismatch, so that change does not affect any failure listed here. I did not check it further.

## 2. A single failure template behind every failure

All 239 + 239 + 4 + 4 failures produce the same `E` line from the EELS consume simulator:

```
src/.../simulator_logic/test_via_engine.py:183: in test_blockchain_via_engine
    verify_block_rejection(
src/.../helpers/rejected_blocks.py:124: in verify_block_rejection
    raise LoggedError(message)
E   ...LoggedError: Client returned unexpected validation error: got: "[BlockException.INVALID_BLOCK_ACCESS_LIST] InvalidBlockLevelAccessList: Suggested block-level access list missing account changes for <addr> at index 1." expected: "<fixture exception>"
```

Every invalid block is still rejected: `engine_newPayloadV5` returns `PayloadStatusEnum.INVALID` (log line from the detail log). Only the rejection reason is wrong. Nethermind reports an EIP-7928 block-access-list mismatch, where the fixture expects one of these:
- a transaction-validity error: `INSUFFICIENT_ACCOUNT_FUNDS`, `INSUFFICIENT_MAX_FEE_PER_GAS`, `SENDER_NOT_EOA`, `NONCE_MISMATCH_TOO_HIGH/LOW`, or a list including `INTRINSIC_GAS…`/`GASLIMIT_…`;
- for EIP-8282, `BlockException.SYSTEM_CONTRACT_EMPTY`.

`<addr>` is the invalid transaction's sender, or for EIP-8282 the empty builder deposit/exit contract (`0x0000bff46984e3725691fa540a8c7589300d8282`, `0x000064d678505ad48f8ccb093bc65613800e8282`). So the **root-cause EIP is EIP-7928 (BAL) parallel validation for all of them**. The "EIP" column below is the EIP named by the test's path, as the brief asks. Fork param: 235 cases run `fork_Amsterdam` and 4 run `fork_BPO2ToAmsterdamAtTime15k` (the EIP-8282 ones). consume-rlp, the sequential block-import path, passes the same fixtures.

In the per-suite tables, "Failing params" is the number of failing parametrisations of each test function. The full parameter IDs are listed where there are few of them. The complete IDs are the `testCases[*].name` entries with `summaryResult.pass == false` in the result JSON named above each table. The example address (abbreviated) is taken from the first failing parametrisation; the full address is in the detail log.

The consume-enginex failure set equals the consume-engine set once `blockchain_test_engine_x` is replaced by `blockchain_test_engine`, in both glamsterdam and quick (checked programmatically).

The EIP-7981 test `test_access_list_sender_balance_boundary` fails 4 times on glamsterdam but not on quick. The quick runs (v21.0.2) contain only 8 parametrisations of that test, and none of them has the failing `*insufficient_balance` IDs.

### Issue / PR detail (GitHub search API, repo NethermindEth/nethermind, open and closed)

- **https://github.com/NethermindEth/nethermind/issues/15223**: open, created 2026-10-26. "Parallel BAL validation reports a block access list mismatch instead of the transaction error (Amsterdam hive regression)". It describes exactly this set:
  - "239 Amsterdam cases in hive `eels/consume-engine` / `consume-enginex`";
  - it names `test_insufficient_balance_blob_tx` (144), `test_no_src_account*`, `test_tx_nonce`, `test_set_code_from_account_with_non_delegating_code` and the EIP-8282 builder contract deployment tests;
  - it gives the cause as `BlockAccessListBasedWorldState.GetAccountChangesOrThrow` throwing on an undeclared address in the parallel path;
  - it says the regression came with #14836 and that consume-rlp (sequential) passes.

  The issue says Reth fails these too. I have not checked that claim for Reth.
- **https://github.com/NethermindEth/nethermind/pull/15249**: open, not merged as of reading (updated 2026-10-27). "fix(bal): retry sequentially when parallel execution hits an undeclared access", body "Fixes #15223". It adds `UndeclaredAccessException` and a sequential retry, and covers the empty EIP-8282 builder deposit contract case. Since it is unmerged, the failures persisting through 2.3.0-preview+d48833af (2026-10-27) is consistent with the code on master.
- **https://github.com/NethermindEth/nethermind/pull/14836**: closed, merged 2026-10-18. "fix(bal): reject an invalid block access list without re-executing sequentially". #15223 names this PR as the change that introduced the regression.
- **https://github.com/NethermindEth/nethermind/pull/15200**: closed, merged 2026-10-26. A sequential retry for frame-tx blocks only (EIP-8141, not Glamsterdam). #15249 says it supersedes this.
