# Audit report

> PLEA security audit, round 2, area A3: The market: PleaHook. PLEA is a sell-gated meme token on Uniswap v4 paired with IMD: anyone buys, selling needs a plea judged by a 30-seat IdentityMD oracle panel, approved pleas score season points for IMD and PLEA prizes, and every trade pays cashback in staked IMD through imd/acc's Stacker. Solidity 0.8.26, Foundry (cancun, via-IR), a Uniswap v4 hook, IdentityMD Intake v2 callbacks. This is the mainnet code, rehearsed first on Sepolia (launch.json on this commit has the Sepolia settings). Other areas of the same commit are audited by separate jobs; stay on this one.

> Context: PleaHook is a fork of POOL4's CappedBurnHook (Ethereum 0xc6c965bd164c483e87d0b550671798e9a3602840) on the IMD side: IMD as the quote asset, LP fee 0, the hook is the only liquidity provider and its liquidity is locked forever, trims burn 100% of the PLEA and the recovered IMD becomes an IMD-only buy wall below the price. Every trade pays 2.0% inside the swap: 0.5% cashback as staked IMD through imd/acc's Stacker (gas budget creditGas + a 1M reserve, plain IMD if the credit reverts), 0.75% to the owner, 0.25% to the season pot (pool liquidity once the Cabal is dead), 0.25% to pool liquidity, 0.25% of the PLEA leg burned. It keeps hourly price checkpoints for the gate (the price an hour's first trade found), each trader's cost basis and hold time, a 90-minute launch window (extra fee 70% to 0%, 5M PLEA per buy), the inventory cap ratchet (only down, at most (seeded - 900k) / 15 a day, never below the holdings or 900k) with trims, the wall placement guard (rises at most 400 ticks a day, drops at once), and the trader rule (hookData, else the router's msgSender(), else a plain-wallet sender; never a router, tx.origin, the Stacker, IMD, sIMD, the PoolManager or the hook).
> Changed since round 1: FINDINGS.md R1-A3-1..3 (hasBought, the exact-output fee, no wall at a drained tick; tests in test/AuditRound1.t.sol). Since run 6: OWNER_BPS 75, CAP_DECAY_DAYS 15.
> Look hardest at:
> - v4 accounting: beforeSwap / afterSwap return deltas for exact-in and exact-out in both currency orderings, the fee on the actually filled amount, partial fills and refunds of unearned specified-side fees, ERC-6909 claims (retainClaims, cashback as claims, the first buy into an empty PoolManager), PayoutsToPool, nothing stuck in the hook beyond the wall reserve.
> - The fee split: the sum of the floor-divided shares never exceeds the IMD fee; the owner's 0.75%, the prize share routed to pool liquidity after the death, the burn taken from the PLEA side; what an outside router or a direct PoolManager unlock can do to any of it.
> - Cashback and the trader rule: a router that lies in hookData or msgSender(), dirty upper bits, the excluded recipients, the Stacker allowance per credit (never the wall reserve), the NotEnoughGas check and the 63/64 rule around the credit, the plain-IMD fallback, RecipientRequired while the Cabal lives.
> - The cap ratchet and trims: can the cap rise, fall faster than the daily allowance, fall below the holdings or the 900k floor; can a trim burn more than the excess or move the wrong IMD; the lastCapDecayAt / capDecayRemainder bookkeeping across long gaps; MIN_TRIM.
> - The wall: placement only below the guard price, the guard's 400-tick daily rise and instant drop, a sell that drains the pool's IMD after the death (the liquidity-free region), rebalance's reverts, WALL_THRESHOLD / WALL_MIN_FILL, settling a filled wall, fundWall from Seasons, wall IMD never leaving the pool.
> - Checkpoints and basis: the hour's first trade recording the price it found (T_PRICE_BEFORE), latestPrice / priceX96 views, basisOf after partial fills, sells and escrowed letters; the gate's executeSell path (gated sells only through the gate while alive, exact-output refused).
> - The launch window: the extra fee's linear decay, the 5M cap, seed once at MARKET_CAP_IMD (5,700 on Sepolia, 14,000 on the mainnet branch), the single-sided position, pleaIsZero in both orderings.

and a judge reproduced, merged and ranked what they found, then read the code once more itself. Nothing in the repository was changed or deployed.

## Findings

### 1. Medium: R1-A3-1 fix incomplete: a first buy of 59-133 wei (IMD fee 1 wei, payouts 0) consumes the first-buy exception, so the next real buy pays cashback, owner and prize shares as ERC-6909 claims

`src/PleaHook.sol:564`

```
        if (buy && imdFee != 0) hasBought = true;
```

FINDINGS.md R1-A3-1 (Medium) is marked fixed by setting hasBought only for a buy with a nonzero IMD fee, and THREAT-MODEL section 3 says a buy whose IMD fee rounds to zero does not consume the exception. But the exception exists to cover the payouts (cashback 0.5% + owner 0.75% + prize 0.25% of the basis), and those round to zero for larger buys than the fee does: the fee is basis*175/10000 (nonzero from 58 wei of basis) while the cashback needs 200 wei, the owner share 134 wei and the prize 400 wei. A first buy of 59..133 wei gross therefore has imdFee = 1 wei, out = 0, asClaims = false (any balance >= 0), sets hasBought = true and leaves the PoolManager holding about 100 wei of IMD. The next real buy (out = 1.5% of the fill > the PoolManager's balance, firstBuy false) takes the claims branch in _payFees: the trader's cashback is minted as an ERC-6909 IMD claim (no sIMD, no Stacker call), the launch owner's 0.75% and Seasons' 0.25% are minted as claims. This is the round-1 grief at a cost of about 100 wei plus gas; seed is permissionless from START, so the dust buy can be back-run into the same block, ahead of the owner's closing first buy that section 3 relies on. The regression test test/AuditRound1.t.sol test_aDustFirstBuyDoesNotConsumeTheFirstBuyException only tries a 1-wei buy (fee 0) and misses this. Invariants checked: 19 (the first buy may route payouts to pool liquidity; here the second buy pays claims instead), 22. Fix preserving the design: consume the exception only when a buy's payouts were actually funded, e.g. compute out first and set hasBought only when buy && out != 0 && !asClaims; or apply the PayoutsToPool redirect to any shortage while the PoolManager holds less than out. Merged from the audit_permissions specialist (reproduced).

**Reproduction**

Project fixture (test/utils/Fixture.sol: IMD is currency0, Cabal alive, past the launch window, PoolManager holding 0 IMD). 1) carol: router.buyExactIn(100, abi.encode(carol)): imdFee = 100*175/10175 = 1 wei, cashback/owner/prize = 0, hasBought = true, imd.balanceOf(pm) = 100 wei. 2) bob: router.buyExactIn(100e18, abi.encode(bob)). Expected (R1-A3-1 fix, invariant 19): bob's 0.5% cashback stacked as sIMD, or the payouts routed to pool liquidity as the first fee-paying buy; no claims. Actual on this commit (test/scratch/Judge.t.sol test_dustFirstBuy100Wei): pm.balanceOf(bob, uint160(imd)) = 491400491400491400, pm.balanceOf(OWNER, imd) = 737100737100737100, pm.balanceOf(seasons, imd) = 245700245700245700, simd.byProject(bob, hook) = 0. The assertion 'bob was paid ERC-6909 claims: 491400491400491400 != 0' fails.

### 2. Medium: Anyone can dilute another holder's buy-weighted hold time (and fact score) by buying PLEA with hookData naming them

`src/PleaHook.sol:538`

```
            _updateBasis(trader, buy, imdBasis + imdFee, buy ? pleaAmt - pleaFee : pleaAmt + pleaFee);
```

The trader is whatever address the swapper puts in hookData (_resolveTrader line 657-663: any non-excluded address is accepted, with no link to the payer). afterSwap then writes a buy into basisOf[trader], and _updateBasis (line 695) moves avgBuyTime toward block.timestamp weighted by the PLEA bought. CabalGate._factScoreAt (src/CabalGate.sol:263-268) reads basisOf(seller).avgBuyTime for the hold band (>=7d: 7, >=3d: 4, >=1d: 2). So a third party can, without the victim's consent, push a seller's buy-weighted age back under a band edge just before the victim submits (front-running submitSell, or pre-emptively, since basisOf is public). The PLEA needed is only held x margin/age: a holder 1 hour past 7 days loses the 3 hold points for a gift of about 0.6% of their position; the victim's need rises by up to 3 (invariant 3 says the fact score is computed from the trader's own record), so a plea scored at need is denied, losing the 0.5 IMD fee and starting the 4-hour cooldown (invariant 5). The gifted PLEA is gated and cannot be sold without a plea, and only improves the share band, which the attacker avoids by targeting sellers not near a 15%/30% edge. hookData is trusted for who earns cashback (harmless: the payer gives it away) but is also trusted to rewrite another account's scoring record. Not listed in THREAT-MODEL section 3 or FINDINGS.md. Invariants checked: 3, 22 (hold time kept per trader and reduced only by final sales: a stranger's buy reduces it). Fix preserving the design: award the hold band only on PLEA whose own age covers the plea amount (per-trader buckets or a FIFO of buys so later additions never age older PLEA down), or record basis only when the trader is the swapper's attested caller and treat other hookData buys as untracked gifts. Merged from the audit_permissions specialist (reproduced).

**Reproduction**

Project fixture (Cabal alive, after the launch window). alice buys 100 IMD of PLEA; carol buys 10 IMD and keeps the Cabal alive for a week (holdAWeek) plus 7 hours with two small trades fixing the hourly checkpoints. alice's buy-weighted age is 175 h and gate.factScore(alice, balance/10) = 36 (hold band 7). bob calls router.buyExactIn(6e18, abi.encode(alice)): the buy succeeds, the PLEA goes to alice, basisOf(alice).avgBuyTime moves to an age of 165 h. Expected: a stranger's purchase does not change alice's scoring record (score 36). Actual (test/scratch/Judge.t.sol test_holdDilution): gate.factScore(alice, same amount) = 33 (hold band 4), so alice's need rises from 35 to 38; the assertion 'a stranger's buy changed alice's fact score: 33 != 36' fails.

### 3. Medium: Zero-fill swaps in the liquidity-free region drag refTick to a drained tick, so rebalance parks the whole wall reserve tens of thousands of ticks below the market once a buy restores spot

`src/PleaHook.sol:965`

```
        curBlockTick = currentTick();
```

_observeTick (lines 956-966) records the post-swap tick as curBlockTick unconditionally and, on the first swap of each new block, walks refTick toward it by up to MAX_REF_STEP (200) ticks. Unlike _updateWallGuard (line 1002), it does not check that the pool has active liquidity at that tick. _rebalance then uses refTick as the wall's edge (line 846 / 853: the safest of spot and refTick) and its drained test (lines 829-831) only compares spot with refTick. After the Cabal's death a seller can drain the market band's IMD to a limit deep in the liquidity-free region (free trading, partial fills allowed, as in the R1-A3-3 test), where every later swap is a zero-fill: a 1-wei exact-input buy with sqrtPriceLimitX96 one unit toward the market moves the price inside the empty region, fills nothing, pays no fee (1*175/10175 = 0) and costs nothing but gas (the swapper's delta is 0), yet runs afterSwap and _observeTick. One such swap per block walks refTick 200 ticks per block to the drained tick (60,000 ticks in 300 blocks, about an hour on mainnet). Once a buy brings spot back into the market band (liquidity != 0, drained false), rebalance() deploys the entire reserve as a wall whose near edge is alignUp(refTick + 1): in the reproduction 60,209 ticks below the market (a PLEA bid at about 0.25% of the market price) instead of against the band as the README (Wall placement guard) and the R1-A3-3 fix promise. The guard does not help: it only floors the placement on the high-price side, and a lower bid is always safe for it. The reserve never leaves the pool (no fund loss) but the buy wall, the only bid support after the death, is useless until refTick walks back (200 ticks per block with a swap, i.e. as many blocks as the attacker spent), and a corrective rebalance is refused (RebalanceNotNeeded) until a further 1 IMD of pool fees or fundWall accrues, since the deployment spent the reserve. The attacker can repeat the drag at any time for gas only. Invariant 21 checked: the wall is placed only below the guard price still holds literally, but the agreed behaviour that a drained, untraded tick never sets the wall's placement (README; FINDINGS R1-A3-3) is broken through refTick instead of spot. Fix: have _observeTick ignore ticks with no active liquidity, as _updateWallGuard does (only assign curBlockTick when poolManager.getLiquidity(poolId()) != 0), or clamp the edge in _rebalance to spot when refTick lies on the drained side of the market band. Merged from the audit_flow specialist (reproduced).

**Reproduction**

Project fixture, after the Cabal's death (skip DEADMAN + 1; PLEA is token1 by default). 1) alice buys 100e18 IMD worth of PLEA, receives 50M PLEA from the distributor, and sells 50M PLEA through the plain router with sqrtPriceLimitX96 = TickMath.getSqrtPriceAtTick(market.tickUpper + 60000): the market band's IMD is drained, getLiquidity() == 0, spot = -180720, refTick = -120721. 2) In each of 310 consecutive blocks bob calls router.buyExactInLimit(1, abi.encode(bob), currentSqrtPriceX96 - 1): each swap fills 0 and costs bob 0 IMD (measured: 0 wei spent over the 310 swaps); liquidity stays 0; hook.refTick() ends at -180720, the drained tick. 3) Next block bob buys 50e18 IMD: spot returns to -120511 inside the market band (liquidity > 0). 4) alice calls fundWall(10e18); keeper calls rebalance(). Expected: the wall's near edge within a few hundred ticks of spot (test/AuditRound1.t.sol asserts this for the undragged case). Actual (test/scratch/Judge.t.sol test_refTickDrag): wall = (-887220, -180720, liquidity 104592815340425039044945), wallImd = 12456990000000000000 (the whole reserve), retainedImd = 12457002457002 wei, gap between the wall's upper tick and spot = 60209; pendingRebalance() is then false. The assertion 'the wall followed the dragged refTick: 60209 >= 1000' fails.

### 4. Medium: A price-limited partial fill with no resolvable trader keeps the whole reserved fee: the swapper pays the IMD fee on the requested amount, not on the fill

`src/PleaHook.sol:507`

```
            else _keep(specifiedIsImd, specFee - specDue);
```

beforeSwap reserves the specified-side fee on the whole requested amount (line 456) and afterSwap settles it against the realised fill (lines 503-508). When the fill is partial (a sqrtPriceLimitX96 near spot) the unearned part specFee - specDue is refunded to the trader, but when the hook resolved no trader (empty hookData and a sender without msgSender(): an aggregator executor, a Safe or any contract wallet that unlocks the PoolManager itself, which is allowed once the Cabal is dead) the surplus is kept: _keep mints it to the hook as pool-share claims (IMD) or burns it (PLEA). The swapper's net cost is fill + fee-on-requested-amount, which can be many times the 2.0% of the fill that THREAT-MODEL invariant 19 promises for every trade through any router ('a partial fill pays only on what filled'). Nothing is stolen, but the swapper silently loses up to 1.72% of the unfilled input to the pool. THREAT-MODEL section 3 only accepts that a trader-less trade pays no cashback (the 0.5% of the fill stays in the pool), not a fee on IMD that never traded. Reachable only after the death (while the Cabal lives a trader-less buy reverts RecipientRequired and sells go through the gate), and only with a self-chosen price limit, so the loss is bounded and partly the swapper's own choice: Medium, with invariant 19's partial-fill clause broken for this class of swap. Fix preserving the design: refund the surplus to sender (the router is the only party the hook knows; a router that cannot name its caller still sweeps its own balance), or for trader-less swaps charge the specified-side fee only in afterSwap on the fill. Merged from the audit_economics specialist (reproduced).

**Reproduction**

Project fixture, after the Cabal's death (plea.restricted() == false). alice has bought 100e18 IMD worth so the pool trades. bob calls the fixture's BuyRouter (it has no msgSender()) buyExactInLimit(1000e18, '', TickMath.getSqrtPriceAtTick(currentTick - 60)) so the hook resolves no trader. Actual (test/scratch/Judge.t.sol test_traderlessPartialFill): bob receives 2371793416510539561844157 PLEA and pays 31419685769073311432 IMD; hook.totalPoolFees() grows by 17092362184741778174 (= 1000e18*175/10175 - the fee due on the fill). The same swap with hookData = abi.encode(bob) (test_traderlessPartialFillCompare) fills the same 2371793416510539561844157 PLEA for 14469530270032094382 IMD with no claims. Expected per invariant 19: the trader-less swap pays at most fill + 1.75% of the fill, i.e. 14.47 IMD, not 31.42 IMD.

### 5. Low: A partially filled exact-input buy refunds the unearned IMD fee as ERC-6909 claims at any pool age whenever the refund exceeds the PoolManager's IMD, not only on the first buys

`src/PleaHook.sol:624`

```
            poolManager.mint(trader, _id(address(imd)), amount);
```

beforeSwap reserves the specified-side fee on the whole requested amount (line 456) and afterSwap refunds the part the fill did not earn through _refund (lines 616-627). The refund is paid as ERC-20 IMD only while the PoolManager's IMD balance covers it (line 620); otherwise it is minted to the trader as an ERC-6909 claim. The refund is 1.72% of (requested - filled), which is unbounded by the pool's size: a trader who sends a large exact-input buy with a sqrtPriceLimitX96 near spot (a partial fill through any plain v4 router, or a slippage limit the market moved past before inclusion) fills little and is owed far more IMD than the PoolManager holds, so the refund lands as claims. THREAT-MODEL section 3 and the README document claims only for the payouts of a buy larger than about 66x the PoolManager's IMD and say only the first few sizeable buys after the open can hit it; this path has no such bound and is reachable whenever (requested - filled) x 1.72% exceeds the PoolManager's IMD balance. For a plain wallet the refunded IMD is unusable until it writes a contract that unlocks, burns and takes (the same limitation the threat model notes for claims). No funds are lost (the claim is backed once the swapper settles) and the trader chose the limit, so Low: an undocumented edge case. Fix: document the path next to the 66x residual (THREAT-MODEL section 3, README fee table) and have the site's router always swap with the MIN/MAX price limit so a fill is never partial, or reserve the specified-side fee in beforeSwap against the IMD the pool can actually fill rather than the requested amount. Merged from the audit_math specialist (reproduced).

**Reproduction**

Project fixture (IMD is currency0, Cabal alive, past the launch window). 1) carol: router.buyExactIn(10e18, abi.encode(carol)): the PoolManager holds 10 IMD. 2) alice: router.buyExactInLimit(1000e18, abi.encode(alice), TickMath.getSqrtPriceAtTick(currentTick - 30)). Actual (test/scratch/Judge.t.sol test_refundAsClaimsOnAMaturePool): alice pays 24053089564451275616 wei of IMD as ERC-20, receives 1188370521621326532801193 PLEA, basisOf(alice).imdSpent = 6974018631829172939, and pm.balanceOf(alice, uint160(imd)) = 17079070932622102677 (FeeRefunded with asClaims = true). Expected per README/THREAT-MODEL: claims only on the first few sizeable buys after the open; here the pool is already trading and an EOA holds a 17 IMD claim it cannot redeem without a contract. The assertion 'refund paid as claims: 17079070932622102677 != 0' fails.

### 6. Info: The 5M PLEA launch cap is per swap, not per transaction or wallet: a router chains several swaps in one unlock

`src/PleaHook.sol:683`

```
        if (block.timestamp < launchedAt + LAUNCH_WINDOW && pleaAmount > LAUNCH_MAX_BUY) {
```

_checkMaxBuy bounds the PLEA output of one swap during the 90-minute launch window. A router's unlockCallback may call PoolManager.swap any number of times inside one unlock (or one transaction), each naming the same trader in hookData, so a single buyer takes 5M PLEA per swap times as many swaps as it likes in one block, paying the same launch fee it would pay for one large buy. The cap therefore limits only the price impact of one swap, not how much one buyer can take early. The README and THREAT-MODEL invariant 20 say 'capped at 5M PLEA each', which matches the code, so this is a documentation/intent note rather than a defect unless the cap was meant to throttle a single buyer. Merged from the audit_economics specialist (confirmed by reading: the check has no per-trader, per-block or per-unlock state).

**Reproduction**

Inside the launch window (block.timestamp < launchedAt + 90 minutes) a contract calls PoolManager.unlock and in its callback runs pm.swap(key, {zeroForOne: !pleaIsZero, amountSpecified: -X, limit}, abi.encode(buyer)) ten times with X sized so each swap yields just under 5,000,000e18 PLEA, then settles the IMD once. Every swap passes _checkMaxBuy (lines 453 and 518 read only the swap's own amount); the buyer leaves with just under 50M PLEA in one transaction. Expected if the cap is meant per buyer or per block: BuyTooLarge; actual: all ten succeed.

### 7. Info: Trader rule case 3 (a plain-wallet sender) is unreachable: a codeless account can never be the swap sender

`src/PleaHook.sol:665`

```
        if (sender.code.length == 0) return _validTrader(sender, sender) ? sender : address(0);
```

The PoolManager only accepts swap from a caller that is inside unlock, and unlock calls back msg.sender's unlockCallback and abi-decodes a bytes return value; an account without code returns empty data, so the decode reverts and the swap never happens. An EIP-7702 delegated wallet has a 23-byte delegation designator, so sender.code.length != 0 and the hook takes the msgSender() path, which a delegated wallet without that function fails (ret.length != 32 -> address(0)). So a wallet that calls the PoolManager itself with no hookData never resolves a trader: while the Cabal lives its buy reverts RecipientRequired, after the death it trades without cashback or a buy record. The documented rule (README 'Who gets the cashback', THREAT-MODEL section 1, the comment at lines 652-655) lists the plain-wallet case as a real path; it is dead code. No funds at risk; the fix is a documentation change or dropping the branch. Merged from the audit_economics specialist (confirmed by reading v4-core PoolManager.unlock and _resolveTrader).

**Reproduction**

An EOA calls pm.unlock directly: unlock reverts decoding the empty return of the callback, so beforeSwap is never reached. A 7702-delegated EOA whose delegate implements unlockCallback but not msgSender() reaches _resolveTrader with sender.code.length == 23, the staticcall to msgSender() returns no 32-byte word, and the trader is address(0): RecipientRequired while alive, no cashback or buy record after the death. Expected per the documented rule: the wallet itself is the trader.
